Community links

At St Mary’s there is a strong emphasis on working with the local community. We have developed links with our local parish churches of Buckfastleigh, Ashburton and South Brent.  For example, the children decorated cribs in each of the Parish Churches and led Crib Services, to which the Parish and school community were invited. In addition, the school also has strong links with the Abbey Church.

The school also welcomes members of the parish to attend school events, such as the Carol Service or the Harvest celebrations.

The school encourages close partnership with parents, to help them to support their children’s learning. There have been several courses held for parents focusing on helping children to read, BLP (Building Learning Power) and e-Safety.

The school also takes every opportunity to work with the local community. Pupils from the school choir have recently sung at a number of residential homes, a local restaurant and community luncheon.

As our pupils come from a number of different Early Years settings, we take every opportunity to develop links between the school and these providers.

St Mary’s also has close links with secondary schools in the local area and every year there is a programme of transition work for our Year 6 pupils. Our secondary school links have also enabled us to take part in a range of sporting and musical activities alongside other local primary schools. South Dartmoor Community College also provides the opportunity for some of our high achieving pupils to participate in a number of workshops.
