Section 48 RE Inspection

Children, staff and governors were delighted with the outcome of the RE Inspection, as the school was awarded the very highest standard in their recent Section 48 inspection.  Church schools have what is called a ‘Section 48 Inspection’ which is carried out by the Diocese every five years.  The school was judged as Grade 1, the highest grading which can be awarded, in all of the five areas inspected.  Two inspectors spent two full days in school, during which time they spoke to children, staff, governors and parents, watched lessons, looked at books and had lunch with the children.

In terms of teaching and learning the report highlighted exemplary practice, stating that: ‘Lessons observed were engaging, challenging and often dynamic. Teachers have excellent relationships with the children and they are keen to learn. Children are not passive in lessons but engage with energy and enthusiasm….Teachers work hard to provide stimulating and engaging lessons which ensure that all children are constantly being enabled to make progress…Marking across the school is excellent. It is consistent and ensures that children feel that their efforts are validated..’

The children are encouraged to help shape the school and are actively fulfil leadership roles on daily basis.  The inspectors highlighted the success of this by stating: ‘The school council works proactively to suggest and organise fund raising events, which reflect their own interests and passions…Children…have a strong voice and staff are supported to enable that voice.’

The behaviour of St Mary’s children was also commented on, as inspectors stated that: ‘Across the school children’s behaviour was exemplary.’

The concluding comment on the Inspection report validated the hard work that takes place at St Mary’s on a daily basis by the staff, pupils and governors : ‘The absolute commitment to service [at St Mary’s] will be what enables the children to become the best that they can be and for the adults to be nurtured and nourished to achieve even greater things. This is a school of which the Bishop, the Diocese and all connected with the school can be justly proud.’
