Burrator Class

Torbay and Devon Civic Award

This year, pupils had to present their work towards the award to other pupils in their class.  They were presented with certificates in school, rather than attend a Presentation Night at St Cuthbert Mayne School, due to COVID 19.

Bridge Building

Burrator Class investigated bridges and learnt about Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a famous Victorian engineer as part of their design technology work. Pupils considered the most effective structures and worked as a team to plan and create their own bridges, which they then evaluated.

Burrator's Victorian Day

To experience what it was like being a Victorian school child, Burrator Class pupils dressed and behaved in the same way as Victorian school children. The day was filled with activities that Victorian children would have carried out, including practising handwriting and learning times tables.

Handbells

A local handbell group came into school to work with Burrator Class. They performed some traditional Christmas carols and allowed the pupils to play the handbells. The carols performed included Jingle Bells and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. This was a very inspiring opportunity for many of the pupils and it is hoped that the school may also be able to develop its own handbell group as so many of the children were enthusiastic to continue to practice their new skills.

Pupil librarians

Our Year 6 School Librarians have received training from professional librarian, Carolyn, who works for the Devon Schools’ Library Service. She showed them some new methods for sorting books and gave them some tips on displaying books on a specific theme. The pupils have also organised a list of ‘Authors of the Term’ and ordered books written by these authors so they can be promoted and shared with other pupils.
