Recycling workshops

Demelza, an Education officer from the Devon Waste team visited St Mary’s to help the school to reduce waste, reuse and recycle more.  She ran workshops in each class to help get everyone thinking about what else they could do to improve the recycling that takes place in school.  This term we have started collecting old pens to recycle and the plastic milk cartons from lunchtime which are now being recycled each day.

Choristers

This year the school is working with the music department at Buckfast Abbey to offer the opportunity for pupils to become Choristers as part of the Buckfast Abbey choir.  The children have choir practices before school as well as an after school practice and then sing in the Abbey on a Sunday.

CPRE Award

A number of pupils were presented with prizes, following the submission of artwork for their latest competition.  All of the children who entered from St Mary’s were also praised for the high standard of work received and in recognition of this, the school were given a special commendation and £50 for their hard work which we will spend on outdoor education next academic year.

Tea Party

To celebrate Buckfast Abbey’s Millennium year, the school were invited to a special tea party at the Abbey.  The theme was ‘Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ so it was no surprise that Alice, the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit were all there to greet the school as they arrived.  Once inside, each pupil was presented with a millennium coin from the Abbey and special cakes including mushroom macaroons, jam tarts, jellies and a special fruit punch.

Archaeological Dig

Dartmoor National Park Authority, through their Heritage Lottery Fund Project, “Moor than Meets the Eye” funded a community archaeological excavation at Widecombe-in-the-Moor.  Some pupils from Year 5 visited a medieval manor house, Glebe  Farm. As part of their outreach programme, pupils were asked to take part in three different activities; archaeological excavation, processing and learning about archaeological finds and a farm tour.
