Curriculum enrichment

During our ‘It’s OK to be different week’, pupils in Burrator Class were invited to the ‘REConnect’ event at Buckfast Abbey’s Education Centre.  It is an annual event which gives pupils from local schools the chance to reflect on the bigger questions in life, using a range of different thought-provoking stations.

It's OK to be different week

St Mary’s hosted an ‘It’s OK to be different week’, based on the book of the same name by Todd Parr.  During the week, each class read a different text to focus their work.  There was also a chance to try some ‘mindfulness’ with our school counsellor and to take part in  some accessible sports, led by Coach Ben.  Parents and carers were also invited into school to learn a bit more about positive mental health from Devon’s Early Help for Mental Health team.   Training for our pupils who are going to become Mental Health Ambassadors also started during the week.

Plymouth Marine Aquarium

Venford class visited the Plymouth Marine Aquarium recently. All of the pupils wrote a report about their visit. This is Abi’s recount, which was published in our school newspaper:

We went by bus to Plymouth Aquarium, because our topic this term is ‘Under and Over the Waves.’ First we put our bags down and had a quick snack. Next we went to the rockpools and saw some shark eggs and some lobsters. We also saw some sharks – I was really excited when they swam above me! I also loved seeing the turtles swimming around their tank. Afterwards we had lunch. Then we saw the octopus and found out that their belly is in the middle of their brain and that they have three hearts. Later on we had one last look around before getting back on the bus to go back to school. It had been such a busy day that some people fell asleep, Finally we arrived back at school – we’d had a brilliant day out!

To encourage reading in Meldon and Venford Classes, St Mary’s have run the RED TED scheme in school – Read Every Day, Talk Every Day.  Each time a child reads with an adult and it is signed in their reading record book, they earn points towards prizes which are then presented in our Achievement Assembly each week.  Prizes range from stickers, pencils and keyrings up to a special Teddy Bear’s Picnic Lunch!

Egyptians topic

Fernworthy Class have been learning all about The Egyptians as part of their topic work.  They celebrated the end of their topic with a special dance they had been learning.
