Fernworthy Class

Community Dentist

The community dentist visited St Mary’s to teach pupils about how to care for their teeth and to help to protect them from decay. The disclosure tablets which were used by some pupils, enabled plaque to be revealed on their teeth and in turn, helped pupils to ensure that this was removed during brushing.

Doctor's Visit

Doctor Kate visited Fernworthy Class to talk about the human body and how it works.  Pupils also discussed  how to stay healthy and how to care for their bodies.

Pupils in Fernworthy Class were visited by John Ingham from CAFOD, to hear about their Zero Hero campaign.  The main emphasis of the workshop was to raise pupils’ awareness of climate change by discussing the causes of climate change, the impact on the UK and other countries and  consideration as to what can actively be done about it. It also links to Laudate Si and Pope Francis’s call to look after “Our Common Home.

Dartmoor Zoo

Fernworthy’s topic has been ‘Producers, Predators, Prey’ and so visited Dartmoor Zoo to learn more about food chains and how living things are related in these. During the visit, pupils saw all sorts of animals and learnt about their habitats. Some people even got to hold a stick insect and a snake!

Tree Power Project

Pupils from St Mary’s took part in a pilot for the new International Tree Foundation resources,  called ‘Tree Power 2: Healthy Food, People and Planet’ which involved learning about sustainable, forest friendly and healthy food production and consumption.  The project took an investigative approach to discussing questions such as:

  • Are there any ways in which food can be improved and made healthier? How might this be achieved? What can we do in our school, home and community?
  • Are there ways to reduce food waste?
