The School Council decided that they wished to raise money for Cancer Research as one of their charities this year. Pupils from St Mary’s School Council planted crocus bulbs in the autumn, kindly donated by the local Rotary Club, as a way of raising awareness of the countries around the world where polio still exists. Some of our Year 4 pupils attended a Philosophy and Ethics Day at South Dartmoor Community College, along with pupils from lots of other feeder primary schools.
Members of St Mary’s School Council were asked to give feedback on some new dishes that are being introduced on the school lunch menus. The children and staff from St Cuthbert’s (where the school lunches are prepared) took the whole thing very seriously. The meat balls proved to be a particularly popular choice!
Some of our pupils were invited to take part in the special Radio Devon service which took place in Buckfast Abbey and was broadcast on Christmas Day. Our choir have performed a number of times in the lead up to Christmas, including at St Andrew’s House (a residential home), Buckfastleigh Christmas Fair and in The Grange restaurant as part of a live broadcast on Radio Devon.
This year, the FOSMs (Friends of St Mary’s) Christmas Fair took place in Southpark Community Centre. Each class had made their own decorations and or gifts to sell at the event, which were sold by some of our older pupils from Burrator. Children in Burrator Class were treated to a hand bell concert by some local people from Buckfast and Buckfastleigh Parish. They played a number of well know Christmas Carols and then people had the chance to join in themselves and have a go. Even the adults tried out the handbells!
To raise awareness of polio, Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland have launched a campaign called Purple4Polio, which is designed to unite communities in activities to raise awareness of this disease and try to eradicate polio for good in the last few remaining countries around the world, through vaccination.
