Visit from Victorian factory worker
Burrator Class pupils had a special visitor recently, Mabel Earnshaw, who visited the class to tell them all about her experiences as a Victorian Factory worker. She answered some questions which the children had prepared for her and left a basket of objects for them to research about her life.
Christmas around the world
Fernworthy Class enjoyed an afternoon finding out about how members of the school community have celebrated Christmas around the world in different countries. One of our governors and a pupil even presented Powerpoint presentations about how Christmas is celebrated in Ethiopia and Spain. Festivals and Celebrations
Mrs Hutchinson got into character as Guy Fawkes to launch Venford Class topic about Celebrations and Festivals. The pupils produced some wonderful creative writing following this role play.
Remembrance Day Parade
Pupils from St Mary’s took part in the Remembrance Day parade in Bovey Tracey as part of 1st Heathfield St Catherine’s Scout Group.
Children in Need
The school councillors decided that they would organise a ‘Wear your onesie to school’ day to help raise money for Children in Need. The day was a huge success and raised a lot of money for very worthy charity.
CAFOD
Simon Giarchi from CAFOD came into school to talk to the children about the charity’s work overseas and to thank them for their fund raising efforts. Members of the school council presented Simon with the money raised by parents and children, which would be put to good use in many different countries around the world.
E-Safety education
St Mary’s welcomed two police officers , Tamzin Campbell-Moseley and Keith Hodgins,to talk to Key Stage Two pupils about how to keep safe online. Children in Fernworthy and Burrator enjoyed the afternoon and parents also have the opportunity to learn about e-Safety in the session being run by Keith Hodgins.
Harvest Celebration
The school held a successful Harvest Celebration, with sixty-five adults attending the afternoon event. £158 was raised for CAFOD as a result of selling food donated by parents and food which had been prepared by the pupils. Writing for a real purpose
Linked to a unit of work on letter writing, pupils from Venford wrote letters to each other and visited the local Post Office to find out how their letters would reach their destinations.
Tag Rugby Tournament
Congratulations to the tag rugby team made up of pupils from Year 5 and 6 who attended a Tag Rugby festival at Newton Abbot Rugby club. Following some Tag Rugby training sessions in P.E. lessons at school, pupils competed against other schools in the tournament and came fourth out of sixteen schools.
