Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education

Meldon Class performed their ‘Wriggly Nativity’ for parents and carers in the school hall. All of the children, including pre-school pupils took park by singing a number of songs and some children had learnt lines to retell the Christmas story.

Burrator Class took part in St Nicholas Day, along with a number of other schools at Buckfast Abbey. Pupils at St Mary’s were invited to participate in a special live nativity at Pennywell which was filmed by the BBC for an episode of Songs of Praise.

Pupils took part in the special assembly to talk about National Anti-Bullying week.   The theme for this year was ‘Small Change. Big Difference.’ Pupils had chance to discuss the theme as part of their PSHE lessons in class and reviewed the Children’s Anti-Bullying Policy. Pupils laid a wreath on Remembrance Sunday as part of the parade through Buckfastleigh. In school on Armistice Day, members of the Scouting Association wore their uniforms as a mark of respect and the art club made poppies to create a focal point for the School Assembly and the two minutes silence.

As part of the multi-faith week each class was visited by Wesam, a local Muslim, who came into school to talk about her faith and to explain how she worships. Each class took part in a practical workshop and had the chance to ask her questions about her Islamic faith.  

This year’s harvest celebration raised money for CAFOD’s ‘Wear it Bright’ campaign and collected produce for the local foodbank.

We have developed a new ‘wellbeing garden’ on the school field, with the help of the Abbey Gardening Department.  The school kindly received a donation from a local family, which has enabled the school to embark on this project.  The school’s Mental Health Ambassadors came up with an action plan for what they would like… Read more »
