St Mary’s has celebrated its 125th anniversary by having a Victorian Day. On 4 December 1893, St Mary’s opened its doors to pupils for the first time and at that point had just 22 children on roll. Pupils from St Mary’s took part in a special procession at Buckfast Abbey, on Education Sunday, to mark ‘Adoremus: National Eucharistic Pilgrimage & Congress’ which took place in Leeds. Fernworthy and Burrator classes took part in an arts project to celebrate the school’s 125th anniversary and also Buckfast Abbey’s millennium year. Pupils from Fernworthy Class visited the Viking village at Escot. During their visit, they learnt about the sort of houses Vikings would have lived in, tool making skills and even had a go at grinding wheat and making some bread.
As part of their topic about minibeasts, Meldon Class visited the famous Buckfast Bees to learn a bit more about these flying insects.
Pupils in Meldon celebrated the end of their half termly topic with an ‘Ugly Bug Ball’. All of the children made ‘bug’ hats and some even dressed up for the occasion! Meldon pupils have been looking after caterpillars this half term as part of their ‘Bug’ topic. Each caterpillar soon turned into a chysallis and then eventually hatched into a beautiful butterfly. The class then watched as the five butterflies were released into the wild.
