Life Skills

Torbay and Devon Civic Award

Congratulations to those pupils in Year 6 who have worked hard this year to gain their Torbay and Devon Civic Award. They were awarded their certificates at a ceremony held at St Cuthbert Mayne School in Torquay.   Click on the link below to find out more about how the pupils achieved the award: Torbay and Devon Civic Award.

First Aid Skills

Burrator pupils took part in some first aid training with Ian Hutchings, as part of their activities week.  During the day the children learnt basic first aid skills including how to deal with someone who has collapsed, is choking or needs bandaging.

Devon Wildlife Champions

St Mary’s is taking part in the South Devon Wildlife Champions scheme, which is organised by Devon Wildlife Trust.  Maya from the Trust came into school to launch the project with a special assembly.  The Wildlife Champions project encourages pupils to engage with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) through outdoor learning.  St Mary’s will be focussing on birds and encouraging them into the school grounds.  Activities planned during the year include:

  • Making bird feeders
  • Designing and making bird boxes
  • Taking part in the RSPB School Watch
  • Learning about using and taking care of binoculars
  • Visit Slapton Ley to look at wintering birds
  • Use Devon Wildlife Trust’s bird microphone to learn different bird calls in the classroom
  • Use a Bushnell style camera traps to attached to bird feeding stations to become familiar with identifying different birds
  • Experiment with which birds like which foods best

School Council and Eco Committee

This year our School Councillors have also worked as our Eco Committee.  Pupils have carried out an Eco audit, implemented action plans and arranged events.  These included a beach clean and making wooden wicker supports for sweet peas.

The school has been successful in achieving the Bronze and Silver Eco Awards and is now working towards its Green Flag Award.

Mental Health Ambassadors

Working with Devon’s Early Help for Metal Health (EH4MH) Team, Year 5 pupils have been with Melody from EH4MH to train to become Mental Health Ambassadors. Everyone received a certificate and a badge to show that they had passed the course! Following the really successful ‘It’s OK to be different week’, our new Mental Health Ambassadors will be working with Miss Slack over the coming terms to look at ways of improving our school.
