Life Skills

It's OK to be different week

St Mary’s hosted an ‘It’s OK to be different week’, based on the book of the same name by Todd Parr.  During the week, each class read a different text to focus their work.  There was also a chance to try some ‘mindfulness’ with our school counsellor and to take part in  some accessible sports, led by Coach Ben.  Parents and carers were also invited into school to learn a bit more about positive mental health from Devon’s Early Help for Mental Health team.   Training for our pupils who are going to become Mental Health Ambassadors also started during the week.

Online Safety

Pupils took part in the Safer Internet Day activities again this year.  The theme this year was ‘Together for a better internet.’  Pupils thought about how to stay safe online, as well as thinking about specific programs and apps and how these should be used safely.

NSPCC Speak Out, Stay Safe Campaign

Collette from the NSPCC visited St Mary’s as part of their ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ campaign.  Pupils took part in an assembly and workshops. Buddy the speech bubble, reminded everyone about the importance of telling someone if you are worried about anything.

The NSPCC have a helpline that children can call too, which they reminded all of the children about as part of their workshops: 0800 1111.

Charity Cake Sale

One of our Year 6 pupils, as part of her Civic Award work, ran a cake stall after school to raise money for a Down’s syndrome Charity, DownSouth.

Visit from community dental nurse

Pupils learnt how to look after their teeth effectively, following a visit from the community dental nurse.
