Venford's Nativity at Pennywell

Pupils at St Mary’s were invited to participate in a special live nativity at Pennywell which was filmed by the BBC for an episode of Songs of Praise.

Anti-Bullying Week

Pupils took part in the special assembly to talk about National Anti-Bullying week.   The theme for this year was ‘Small Change. Big Difference.’ Pupils had chance to discuss the theme as part of their PSHE lessons in class and reviewed the Children’s Anti-Bullying Policy. The School Council discussed how the school could work together to develop new anti-bullying strategies and came up with the idea of using stickers and certificates to celebrate acts of kindness and compassion. These awards are called ‘WOW (Witness of the Week) awards and are presented as part of Friday’s Achievement Assembly. These have also been linked with the Academy Trust’s Vision and Gospel values, by awarding Gospel stickers that relate to the WOW certificate being awarded.

Pupils laid a wreath on Remembrance Sunday as part of the parade through Buckfastleigh. In school on Armistice Day, members of the Scouting Association wore their uniforms as a mark of respect and the art club made poppies to create a focal point for the School Assembly and the two minutes silence.

Cultural Champions' Visit

As part of the multi-faith week each class was visited by Wesam, a local Muslim, who came into school to talk about her faith and to explain how she worships. Each class took part in a practical workshop and had the chance to ask her questions about her Islamic faith.

This year’s harvest celebration raised money for CAFOD’s ‘Wear it Bright’ campaign and collected produce for the local foodbank.
