Helen Parr, the Community Engagement Officer for the Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project came into school to talk to pupils about the importance of these endangered mammals. Helen showed the Project’s website and we watched video images of the live bat roost which is located in the caves nearby in Buckfastleigh. She then explained the process of echolocation, to explain how bats build up a sonic map of our surroundings. Part of the John Muir Award this year is to learn more about bats and how to protect their environment. Over the next few months, St Mary’s hopes to become a Bat Friendly School using advice and support from Helen.
