Abbey Choristers
In 2018, Buckfast Abbey celebrated 1000 years since its foundation. As a lasting legacy, Buckfast Abbey now offers the opportunity for children aged between 7 and 11 from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School (and until they are 14 years old) to be part of their Choral Foundation.
The choristers rehearse after school on Wednesdays in preparation for singing the Conventual Mass on Thursdays in the Abbey Church, and at the 12:05 Conventual Mass on alternating Saturdays in term time. The choristers also join the Abbey Choir once a term to sing for Sunday Solemn Mass. Each chorister receives a scholarship from the Abbey for individual vocal and piano tuition. Each chorister also works towards exams in singing and piano for the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music.
For more information about Choristerships at Buckfast Abbey please take a look at the leaflet about Abbey Choristerships, or feel free to contact St Mary’s directly (admin@st-marysrc.devon.sch.uk), or Dr Robert Pecksmith (rpecksmith@buckfast.org.uk), Assistant Master of the Music, who is always happy to receive enquiries from parents/ carers of potential choristers.
The Choristers were invited to take a trip to the top of the Abbey tower.
